MANUFACTURERS UNITE TO SOLVE THE RETAILING PUZZLE
At the 2012 CHA Winter Convention and Tradeshow in Anaheim

Silverdale, Washington (November 1, 2011) Clearsnap®, Globecraft Memories, Justrite Stampers, Makin’s Clay®, Rubber Stamp Concepts, ScraPerfect, The Robin’s Nest, and Westcott Brand Cutting Tools are the 2012 Independent Manufacturers Partners (IMP), a loosely affiliated group of independent CHA members who will be cooperatively promoting their products at the Craft & Hobby Association Winter Conference & Trade Show held January 29-February 1, 2012 in Anaheim California.

Amy Roszak, IMP founder of ScraPerfect explained, “Just as products are used together, I knew that collaboration between manufacturers would be a very effective way to promote our products. The way we fit together reminded me of a jigsaw puzzle; as such, my vision has become a reality. Building upon the excitement and success of last year, I have decided to do it again.” With a total value over $2500.00, the giveaway of nine IMP prize packages consisting of various manufacture’s products will be a compelling reason for retailers to familiarize themselves with participating manufacturer’s products at the upcoming CHA show. CHA show attendees will find an advertisement in the CHA Show Guide about the IMP promotion.

To be eligible for the prize packages, retailers can start with any of the eight participating manufacturing partners to register and pick up a blank puzzle board. They will visit each of the IMP booths to learn about the company’s product offerings, collect a piece of the puzzle, and place it on the puzzle board. The completed puzzle and entry form can be turned in at any of the IMP booths. Retailers should be on the look out to learn how they may be eligible to earn additional chances to win the prize packages. “We know it’s the retailers who really solve the retailing puzzle,” Roszak remarks. “And we want them to have fun while they learn about our products.”

New this year is an exciting and educational workshop co-sponsored by the exhibiting partners. IMP is proud to announce that Cindi Bisson will be leading the project design and activities where workshop participants will be introduced to the manufacturers’ products, and will be creating a beautiful mixed media art project incorporating the art and craft materials provided by participating manufacturers. In addition, participants will leave the workshop with an assortment of products donated by participating manufacturers. The IMP concept embraces diversity by bringing together CHA manufacturing members from various show floor categories made up of some large established companies as well as some smaller and less known companies. The manufacturing partners offer a blend of consumables products such as adhesives, embellishments, inks, and polymer clay, as well as non-consumables products such as cutting tools, display globes, rubber stamps, and storage systems. The

ScraPerfect booth will host the Designer Gallery where show attendees can observe designers creating projects made from the collaboration of various IMP products. Show attendees can find completed project samples on display for viewing ahead of time, along with the Gallery Schedule posted in the booth. “Our group of professional designers are excited to illustrate how these products work beautifully together!,” says Deborah Mahnken, Designer Coordinator.

After reading on Craft Test Dummies about stamping on fabric, I was wondering if ScraPerfect’s Perfect Crafting Pouch would significantly improve stamped images by reducing the bleeding,  for which brands it worked best, and I wanted to see whether it mattered if it was on cotton or polyester.  Here’s what I did…

1. I gathered all the different brands of dark dye pads I had, using the same stamp for all the trials.
2. I stamped on untreated cotton muslin and untreated polyester twill (stamping twice just in case).
3. I treated the material by tapping the Perfect Crafting Pouch onto both material and stamped again below the first image.
4. I heat set the images with a hot, dry iron and washed the material by hand in cool water. (I could see the water turned a little purple….)
5. Finally, the materials were dried by ironing.

RESULTS

1. Cotton Muslin

Washing caused color changes and fading which ranged in severity.  All treated images were, in fact, slightly crisper due to the Perfect Crafting Pouch.  (The Perfect Crafting Pouch has no effect on permanence of ink after washing, of course.)

2. Polyester Twill

Bleeding on polyester is much more severe than bleeding on cotton and therefore, the reduction in bleeding by Perfect Crafting Pouch was much more evident and necessary on the polyester than on the cotton. Some inks that bled unacceptably without treating polyester could be used with very good results when the material was treated with the Perfect Crafting Pouch. The pouch even improved StazOn stamped on polyester –which was quite good to begin with (see close-up).

In a nutshell: Most inks can be used with good results on cotton, especially if the fabric is not being washed. The Perfect Crafting Pouch improves the results, but if they are good to begin with, it may not be necessary to treat cotton. Polyester, even more of a challenge when washing, is much more difficult to get good stamping results on as untreated polyester bleeds severely. The great news is that the Perfect Crafting Pouch makes a huge difference — making unacceptable inks good and good inks great!  The pouch also stops bleeding with many other types of inks including Copic solvent inks, Fabric markers, waterbased markers such as Tombo, and inkjet printers. Heat setting the ribbon or fabric after stamping may prevent subsequent bleeding.

While I love Tombo water-based, fade resistant markers for writing on most paper, they fade and resist when used on many vellum and other shiny papers, as do most water-based markers. Instead of buying a whole set of specialty markers, simply pretreat the vellum or paper prior to writing and the results can be astounding!This is a blue Tombo marker on Hot off the Press green vellum. The top is untreated, the bottom was pretreated with the Perfect Crafting Pouch prior to writing the words.

And I thought fabric markers were made not to bleed on fabric! I guess it depends upon the material… If you are using cotton, they probably do great – as do some other non-fabric markers. 
But on polyester… you need the Perfect Crafting Pouch to stop the bleeding!

These tests were all done with Marvy Uchida Fabric Markers on Wright’s Twill tape–both found in a fabric department.

Kara, a creative and curious crafter, did some testing and found the PERFECT CRAFTING POUCH to stop the bleeding of the Copic markers, especially the mostly difficult Carmine Red on non Copic-friendly papers. Evidently, she’s been a pouch fan for a long time for inkjet printing on challenging papers. She posted the results of her testing on her blog, Whisk, Paper and Silver. When working with digistamps, she found surprising muddying issues when using the pouch and the Copics.  So, after getting some Copics, I ran some quick tests on regular inkjet paper looking only at the muddying issue not the Copic bleeding. Typically,  we use the pouch before inkjet printing to stop the ink from bleeding — but in this case, the inkjet ink wasn’t bleeding. So what I found is it is best with Copics to apply the Perfect Crafting Pouch after inkjet printing, but before the Copic markers.  Also, it appears that even using the pouch before printing with the photoblack cartridge did not cause the muddying found with the regular (grey-scale) ink cartridge. Kara said, “I used the pouch before printing [the sunflower digistamps], and I was getting muddying.  I didn’t think to try the pouch after printing – my thought was that if I’m going to use a paper that’s problematic with Copics, it’s probably also going to be problematic to print on. ” Maybe not!

I think it would be especially important to use all sorts of papers for testing–including the Copic specialty papers– and try all sorts of inks–both on the inkjet printer and regular stamp inks. I’m hoping more experienced Copic-users will follow up on this!
