Using Old Slide Frames

I’m writing my next article for Natural Life Magazine answering a
question about what to do with old slides. One answer: Use them in mixed
media collage style scrapbooking.

I
started this heritage project with a 6×6 inch wrapped canvas ready
primed. I painted with acrylics and used a swirly stamp while the paint
was still wet to lift the paint for texture. I inked my edges roughly
with distress and pigment inks. I kept the scrappy style going by
tearing, crumpling and inking some origami paper, a strip of sparkly
card, and adding a border of ribbons – all adhered with Best Glue Ever.

I
arranged three photos – one of my grandmother with me as an infant, one
of my husband as a toddler with his grandmother, and one of my daughter
with her Nan, my mother, punched and matted. I found some Asian
characters on some kind of small trading card, which reflects my
location in Singapore in the photo with my grandmother, which I cut and
framed with one of the old slides I have. I used the film strip as
another textural element peeking out from the matting. Again Best Glue
Ever adhered everything, including the celluloid and craft foam remnants
I used to raise some elements for a bit of dimension. I just dotted
some BGE on the back of the items and let it sit for a few minutes.

I finished the project with some decorative rub-ons, a title tag, a
pretty vintage style medallion (which had lost its sticky so it needed
more BGE) and a stacked vintage look sticker. I used the Embellie Gellie
to place some small pearl gems. I love aging small pieces of cardstock
with my dedicated glass nail file and some pigment ink.

Finally to finish the piece, I painted some Distress Crackle on the
sides, and pushed an enamel look heart pin into the foam behind the
medallion. The Perfect Cleaning Cloth is great for removing fingerprints
from photos.

*Stay tuned for a Tutorial on my blog for using old holiday cards, a
circle punch and Martha Stewart score board to make some cute tree
ornaments, glued with the Best Glue Ever, of course!
