How to use altered paper clips to make a stash of custom cards, and a journal or planner bookmark – and a chance to Win Scraperfect products

Card with Altered Paper Clip and Jackalope
Card with altered paper clip embellishment
Robyn Coburn here, guest designer, with another post about altered
paper clips – which will most likely feature heavily in all my card making and cropping
for a while.

These altered paper clips are so fun and easy to make. It occurred to me
that it might be nice to have a couple of special ones on hand that I could use
to customize some cards for different occasions and uses as they occur through
the year.
Layers of scraps from past projects and Happy Birthday sticker for when I need it.
I wanted to keep the whole aesthetic scrappy, and eco-friendly, so I used leftover papers and magazine pages, and upcycled an old paper shopping bag that was too pretty to discard. I tore some
leftover double-sided paper and layered it on to blank cards, using tiny spots
of Best Glue Ever, just like always. I made sure to leave the top side  not attached so I could slide the paper clips on.
I also made a pocket card by folding a long rectangle twice. I did some very
light embellishment and inking, holding back to let the focus be on the paper clips.

Ready to use Embellie Gellie to pick up that button for my “Thank You” paper clip. Can you see the tiny glue spot on the bottom right of the floral sticker?

The paper clips were super easy to make. I found a heavy
paper worked better than actual card stock as the base layer, folding over the
actual clip, and was held in place perfectly with Best Glue Ever. I layered with assorted scraps left over from other projects, as
well as washi tape (so fast) and some vintage button embellishments and stickers from
in my stash. Then I realized that I had several little jackalopes left over
from our cross-promotion with the beautiful Lawn Fawn – and look how cute and
perfect these diminutive little critters are on an altered paper clip!

Here I’m using BGE to glue two pieces of scrap cardboard together to add dimension to my jackalopes.

The back of an altered paper clip
Here’s what the back looks like. Remember to keep the long end of the clip on the outside. I used a variety of paper clip sizes from my office supplies.
I finished them off with one or two strings tied in a bow – about 6 inches worked fine. I love baker’s twine and wax coated threads, but fine yarn would work too.
I can see using the paperclips on cards and gift bags, as
well as journals or planners. It could be fun to use a paper clip as a gift tag, that the recipient could later use in their own journal if they wrote about the event, or to clip to their vision board.
I used a rub on element, a sticker and a cut out collage image over washi tape.
I made a long one to use with this blank journal
I have, which I covered (in the shopping bag paper) to make it more appealing. Best Glue Ever worked very
well on the lightly textured original surface. I’m going to turn it into an art and ideas notebook, and now I have a terrific book mark to keep my place.
