Turning An Altered Book into a Spooky Halloween Collage

It’s October and officially time for Halloween crafting!  Today I want to share a piece I made using a vintage book cover, my favorite ScraPerfect products and a lot of Tim Holtz Halloween stuff.

To start this piece I used a piece of matte paper from Ranger’s Adirondack Alcohol Ink paper.  This paper is basically their glossy paper, albeit with a matte surface.  I decided to grab a handful of Distress Inks and Distress Oxide Inks to make my background.  The background was made by smearing the inks onto my craft mat, lightly spritzing with water and then dragging the paper through the wet ink.  Once it was dry, I dragged it again, building up layers. To fill in sparse areas I took a blending tool and picked up some of the ink right off the craft mat.

Once I was satisfied with the background, I dusted the paper with the Perfect Crafting Pouch before stamping with black ink.  This ensured that all the ink was dry before I stamped, as well as gave me a crisper stamped image.

Now came the layering.  Using the Best Glue Ever, I attached my stamped background onto a vintage book cover.  I chose this one because the green fabric complemented the Cracked Pistachio Distress Oxide ink I’d used.  Next, I layered some Halloween collage pieces, pumpkin, twine and plastic alphas.  All the embellishments are from Tim Holtz’s Idea-ology collection.

Finally, I used the Best Glue Ever to help me attach the metal clip at the top, prior to fastening it with the brads. The glue will help keep the clip in place, especially helpful since this piece will be displayed vertically. I used a toothpick to spread my dots of glue to help cover as much of the back as I could.

Now, all I need is a bowl of candy corn and some scary music!
